1940 -
On 31 July 1940, S. Udham Singh was hanged at Pentonville Prison for killing Michael O\'Dwyer, who ordered killings of innocent people in Jallianwala Bagh. He was buried later that afternoon within the prison grounds. In March 1940, Indian National Congress leaders, including Jawahar Lal Nehru and Mahatama Gandhi, condemned the action of Udham as senseless, but in 1962, Nehru did an about-turn and applauded Singh with the following statement in the daily Partap: \"I salute Shaheed-i-Azam Udham Singh with reverence who had kissed the noose so that we may be free.\"
